Travel Insurance
Most people upon retiring enjoy the freedom it gives them and often use this time of their life to visit the places they have dreamt about and also allows many people to visit friends and family which are scattered around the globe. Traditionally over 50s or senior travel insurance cost a small fortune, with many companies charging an extortionate amount for single and annual cover. However, in recent years this has changed, many companies provide travel insurance for over 50s and certain companies only provide over 50s travel insurance, which has dramatically reduced the price and made it a more feasible option.
Furthermore, over 50s are able to get a reduced premium as well as bonus features due to the increased competition between companies; therefore, it is vital to look at various different companies before deciding on a policy. Although, while many companies offer cheap travel insurance premiums, the cheapest policy is not always the best, often the cheaper policies does not cover all illnesses and accidents and may have a higher excess. Moreover, it is important to understand that insurance companies often decide a price depending on the policy holder’s age, for example a 51 year old will pay a very different price to a 65 year old, and only some insurance companies offer policies up to or from a certain age.
The majority of policies offer single trip cover which lasts on average up to 92 days and will cover, for example a weekend holiday to a European city as well as a longer stay abroad with family or friends. Many over 50 insurance companies offer two levels of cover; firstly, there is the basic cover which will only cover emergency medical treatments and the loss of baggage. The second level of cover is a more comprehensive cover which includes medical emergency cover, any holiday cancellations, baggage loss, the loss of a passport, any personal money loss, repatriation and any other problems. Moreover, many companies will also provide bonus features such as discounts for couples for any levels of cover.
The most important aspect of over 50s travel insurance is to ensure that your policy will cover the appropriate medical conditions, such as angina or diabetes. The majority of insurance companies will provide cover for all conditions, but you must declare any pre existing conditions so that you get the correct policy.
